Since the development of the first automobiles, they have spread all over the world and have given birth to car racing. Car racing may be of different types such as Formula One, Formula Three, NASCAR or IndyCar and each type of racing has its own range of famous championships. The factors that contribute to the popularity of a certain type of race or track could be the complexity of the course, the cars participating in the race and their drivers. For instance, everyone knows about Michael Schumacher. Schumacher is an important symbol of Formula 1 racing. Currently, the 5 most popular races on the planet include the following:

Monaco Grand Prix (Monaco GP)

The race is so popular that its games were introduced on gaming consoles in their earlier days. It dates back to 1929. The Monaco Grand Prix of F1 races are the most popular races in the world at present. Besides the inclusion of Formula One cars and drivers, the races are popular for the complex circuit which has characteristics such as narrow tracks, sharp turns and elevation changes. This circuit is known as Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo.

Indianapolis 500

The 500 in its name suggests it all. The annual race is held on a 500 mile course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It started back in 1911 and has become one of the most attended sporting events in the world. The race goes on for 200 laps and also allows IndyCars since 1996.

24 Hours of Le Mans

The racing event is perhaps one of the most competitive ones across the globe. The race goes on for 24 hours and each participating car has a team of three drivers who take turns. It is held in Le Mans, a city in France and has proved to be an endurance test for the drivers as their concern throughout the race is not only winning but also ensuring that they make it through without causing any major damage to their cars.

Daytona 500

The Daytona 500 is part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. It is a 500 mile long race with 200 laps that is held on an annual basis at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach. Throughout the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, there are only four restrictor plate races that limit the top speed of all cars. Daytona 500 is one among them. It began with the opening of the Daytona International Speedway in 1959 and for the last 32 years, it is the opening race for the series.

Dakar Rally

The Dakar Rally is also commonly referred to as Dakar. It was previously known as Paris-Dakar Rally as most of the events of the rally used to be from Paris to Dakar. The annual off-road race was first introduced and organized by Amaury Sport Organization. In the recent past, security threats in Mauritania have led the race to change its location to South America (Argentina and Chile). For the last 6 years, the race is being held in South America. The interesting bit about this off-road race is that it is open to amateurs as well as professionals. In fact, around 80% of the participants of the Dakar Rally are amateurs.
